About the Event

  • Do you translate what you say from your native language?
  • Are you afraid of making mistakes?
  • Do you ever feel like you don’t sound natural?
  • Do you have difficulty understanding when people speak quickly?

Identity

Learning and speaking a new language is an opportunity to become someone new. In fact, the development of a new identity is what allows us to start feeling more comfortable with the language and also to stop translation from our first language. Language is about community, and part of learning a language is embracing the identity of a member of this new community.

Stress & Intonation

English is a stress timed language. This means that we give more stress to certain words in a sentence than others. That is what gives English its rhythm and makes it a musical language. Other languages are syllable timed, which means that each syllable takes equal stress. For speakers of syllable timed languages, it can be difficult to master the rhythm of English.

Self-Monitoring

English language learners typically fit easily into one of two categories. One group takes too long to say what they want to say because they are afraid of making a mistake. The other groups speaks and speaks without stopping but makes lots of mistakes and is often misunderstood. The first group has a high self-monitor, and the latter has none. The key to fluency is finding a balance.

Connected Discourse

Connected speech is the result of stress timing. We often change the sounds in words in order to maintain our rhythm. This means cutting out sounds, changing sounds, or even adding new sounds. It’s the reason that speakers rarely pronounce words the way they are spelled and can cause listeners with an untrained ear to misunderstand.
